Light up the north

David A. Law says streetlights are needed on Maple Drive in Quesnel

Editor,

As an oldtimer who has spent more than half a century living and working in the north, I am concerned with the inequities between the Lower Mainland and northern communities. It is annoying to see load after load of wood products and other resources flow south, with little coming back this way.

It seems that the old adage “there is no hope beyond Hope” is alive and well.

Moving forward, I will address one specific example here in Quesnel.

During the past two years, I have brought up, what I feel is a legitimate safety issue to the local MLA and the Ministry of Transportation a number of times. That issue is the lack of street lighting on Maple Drive. This street is a main route, with two schools, a church and a number of other businesses. It is very well used, and even more so now with the Johnston Bridge being off-limits for commercial traffic.

Before taxpayers shell out more money for SkyTrain, bridges, tunnels and new ferries, could we get some streetlights on this very needy thoroughfare? There are children, adults, dogs and cats at risk here. As well, there are oldtimers (and youngtimers) like me that definitely don’t want to have an unfortunate accident, especially one that is preventable.

Our government puts out many TV ads about safety. Maybe they could put some of our money where their mouth is and address this very real safety issue.
