Separation isn't the answer - Canada is stronger united

To the Editor,

In the wake of a divisive election, it's understandable that many Canadians feel frustrated or unheard. But now more than ever, we need to resist the temptation to turn that frustration into division. Talk of provincial separation might feel like a bold statement but in reality, it poses serious risks and would only make life harder for everyday people.

Separation means much more than drawing a new line on a map. It brings inflation, economic instability, loss of national services and the breakdown of interprovincial trade and cooperation. Canadians rely on shared infrastructure, healthcare funding, pension systems and disaster response. Walking away from Confederation would mean starting from scratch very likely with increased taxes, complicated legal transitions and weakened international influence.

It's also a myth that separation guarantees fairness or independence. The new challenges would likely outweigh any perceived gains, especially for working families and rural communities. Division only weakens us all.

But frustration does have a place, it should fuel action, not apathy or alienation. If we feel the system isn't working, let's talk about electoral reform, referendums and stronger regional representation. These are productive ways to demand change without tearing down the country we all call home.

Canada is built on compromise, cooperation and collaboration. Those values aren't always easy to uphold, but they're essential to keeping out country strong and just.

Let's work together to build a better future - not by turning away from one another but by stepping up, speaking out and standing firmly for unity.

Sincerely,

Joy Belle Godwin
