WestJet will soon be taking Anne and Dave Sutton somewhere into their world of flight. Anne’s name was drawn as the grand prize winner of the 2023 WestJet raffle held by the Quesnel chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS).

“We are thankful, for once again we sold all 1,000 tickets,” said BBBS executive director Joanie Newman. “All monies stay with our agency to continue to offer the free programs in the community.”

According to BBBS data, only one in five young people have access to a web of supportive adult relationships. The raffle is one of the many large fundraisers held by the youth development agency to help improve that network of support in the local community.

“If you like outdoor activities, watching movies, or just hanging out, and you have the time (approximately two hours per week) to give back, we have 15 youth waiting to be matched with an adult from our community,” said Newman. “BBBS Quesnel is also looking for youth (ages 6-16) to participate in our Big Bunch program. We have monthly activities that include swimming, bowling, arts and crafts, and more. If your child would like to join please call Shawna.”

The hard BBBS work is in aid of easing some important statistical pain. Young people with access to developmental relationships are 21 times more likely to manage their emotions well, their data indicates. BBBS mentees are 60 per cent more likely to report feeling consistently happy. Mentees are 45 per cent more likely to report feeling consistently confident.

“With Christmas just around the corner, we are preparing for our Bigs and Littles Christmas Matinee,” Newman said. “In the spirit of the season, we are busy filling all those gift and treat bags, getting into the essence of sharing, giving and receiving - being thankful for all things life has to offer. We are looking for a community sponsor for the matinee. If you are interested in sponsoring this group outing or future group events, please contact our office 250-992-7257.”
