Breathing new colour into Quesnel arts scene

Biennial art show features SD28’s best young creators in New Art

The paintings are new, and then the artists are new, so the Quesnel Art Gallery’s latest exhibition is naturally titled New Art.

This showcase opens Mar. 12 at a 7 p.m. reception celebrating the high school students of School District 28.

“The diverse works on display highlight the artistic achievements and unique perspectives of the next generation of artists in our community,” said Shae Lightening of the Quesnel Art Gallery’s curatorial staff.

There will be live music performed by youth, as well, at the reception, underscoring the growing creative powers of local young creators.

“This exhibition not only celebrates the artistic achievements of our local students but also provides a platform for them to share their voices, visions, and creative expressions,” said Lightening. “We believe that by showcasing the talents of our youth, we can inspire and foster an ongoing appreciation for the arts right here in our community.”

The public is invited to attend the opening reception, where many of the artists will be in attendance to discuss their work, or the process of art in general. The show is sponsored by School Distict 28 so some of the teachers and other mentors of youth will also be there in support of this group exhibition, representing a major affirmation of this year’s work.

“This is an exciting event for these young artists,” said Lightening. “It requires a good deal of vulnerability to put one’s works on display, whether it’s their first time doing so or not. Some of the students have been prompted to think about their audience, who they are trying to appeal to with their art. Creating art for an audience and having it shown in public spaces comes with a variety of challenges, and it’s no small feat even in a small town.”

This is a regular event for the Quesnel Art Gallery, one anticipated with eagerness by local art fans. It introduces the local public to the next wave of artists, who will soon be holding solo exhibitions of their own, or signing their name on new public art they have made somewhere around the community, or selling their works into collections near and far.

“I personally get very excited to see this exhibit,” said Lightening. “We do this one every two years and it always impresses me. The creative talent we see from the students is absolutely wonderful. Our gallery walls really liven up with the unique perspectives of these young artists. I can’t wait to see what they have for us this year.”

New Art will be on display at the Quesnel Art Gallery and Gift Shop (500 North Star Road) until Apr. 4.
