City Council hosted a special open meeting of Council and a public hearing on Bylaws 1829 and 1830 relating to the proposed B.C. Housing Elliott Street Supportive Housing Project on Monday evening.

The public hearing attracted more than 70 Quesnel residents.

Mayor Bob Simpson said Council members have a package of written public submissions for and against the proposed development, and Council heard more than 20 verbal submissions from the gallery during the meeting at City Hall, including those from residents of Elliott Street and West Quesnel, and business owners in the area.

Representatives from the Board of Education, B.C. Housing, Seasons House and Quesnel Tillicum Society also spoke.

A public hearing allows members of the public to address Council with concerns. Council members were able to ask questions for clarification, but the function of the hearing was not to debate the merits of the proposed bylaws.

Council met Tuesday evening for the second and third readings of Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw 1829 and Zoning Amendment Bylaw 1830. At press time the outcome of the readings is unknown.

Mayor Simpson stressed to residents during the hearing that Council may accept or reject the bylaws during the second, third or final readings.

Final reading of the bylaws is scheduled for Nov. 7, subject to receiving all required information.
