No B.C. university offers a doctorate of veterinary medicine

Prince George-North Cariboo Independent candidate and incumbent MLA Coralee Oakes is calling for the creation of a vet school at UNBC as part of her campaign.

“Today, you cannot get a DVM degree (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) in B.C. That is unacceptable. Northern B.C. needs large animal vets that can assist our ranchers. The notion that Canada’s third largest province cannot produce a single veterinarian is an embarrassment. Today, there are only five universities in Canada that can grant a DVM,” said Oakes in a news release.

The nearest school to offer a DVM is the University of Calgary in Alberta.

“Ranching has been a vital part of the Cariboo economy for years. It’s time we get the support we need. I will fight to get a full-blown vet school in Northern B.C,” said Oakes.

Oakes is running as an Independent candidate after BC United announced it was suspending its campaign. She is one of several BCU incumbents running as an independent in this election.

Election day will be Oct. 19 and advance voting will take place from Oct. 10 to Oct. 13. People can find more information such as where to vote and register at Elections.bc.ca.

Oakes is running against BC Conservative candidate Sheldon Clare, BC Green candidate Randy Thompson and BC NDP candidate Denice Bardua.
