The local school district has come up with a recommendation for replacing Quesnel Junior School (QJS).

The Quesnel Board of Education submitted the final Project Definition Report for the replacement of Quesnel Junior School to the Ministry of Education on April 4.

QJS closed in June 2018, and Grade 8 and 9 students and staff were temporarily moved to the old Maple Drive Junior School location this September.

“District and Ministry of Education staff have worked collaboratively and developed a positive working relationship over the duration of this project,” states a press release from School District 28.

Work on the Project Definition Report took the better part of year to examine the three options up for consideration. The three options included:

1. Structural upgrade and major renovation to the existing QJS downtown location;

2. Addition/renovation to Maple Drive Junior School; and

3. Full replacement built on the Maple Drive Junior site

Based on the work completed by various third-party consultants and a quantity surveyor, the low-cost option is option 3, a full replacement built on the Maple Drive Junior site.

“The Ministry of Education tends to fully support the low cost option, so the district is optimistic that this will be put forward for approval by government and considered for funding,” according to the news release.

“The dates for approval have not yet been shared with the District, though we hope to hear a favourable announcement by the end of this school year.

“The Quesnel Board of Education wishes to thank the ministry of education and district staff for all their hard work on getting this report completed and are looking forward to hearing a positive announcement regarding this project in the near future.”
