UPDATE: The Chub Lake wildfire is now under control, according to Darren Wilkinson, the senior wildfire officer for the Cariboo Fire Centre.
Wilkinson said that crews are expected to be on scene both today and “probably” tomorrow. Wilkinson credits the firefighters with the 100 Mile Stormriders with helping to get the fire under control, who were there until 8 p.m. battling the blaze.
Power has yet to be restored to 39 customers around Chub Lake, however, according to BC Hydro, crews are on site trying to restore power.
Wilkinson says that “pretty heavy frost” and overnight temperatures also played a role in containing the wildfire.
ORIGINAL STORY: Firefighters with BC Wildfire battled an out-of-control wildfire near Chub Lake north of 100 Mile House.
The fire started on Tuesday, April 2, according to Darren Wilkinson, the senior wildfire officer for the Cariboo Fire Centre, after a tree fell onto a power line due to gusts of wind. The tree then caught fire.
Power is out around the Chub Lake area according to BC Hydro’s outage map. BC Hydro is currently on site to restore the power line.
Wilkinson said around 14 firefighters are currently deployed at the site battling the 2.5-hectare blaze.
There is no current risk to the public, and damage to structures is minimal - only grass and shrubs have been affected.
The fire should be under control by the end of the day, according to Wilkinson.
