UPDATE: Quesnel River Pulp the site of multiple hotspots

Firefighters take action on at least three heat-sources at the pulp factory

Quesnel River Pulp had fire on the factory roof, the afternoon of April. 1.

The pulp operation located at 1000 Finning Road was the scene of a fire alarm at about 3:30 p.m. Sixteen personnel from Quesnel Fire Department rushed to the large structure, starting with about a dozen initially then more from the volunteer ranks coming as their workday ended and the incident continued.

Their concentration was on at least three noticeable hotspots on the roof.

“Upon arrival there were portions of the roof area on fire and around the line No. 3 dryer system,” said QFD chief Ron Richert. “Employees from Quesnel River Pulp assisted the Quesnel Fire Department gaining access to this area so the fires could be extinguished.”

A ladder truck, rescue vehicle and tender (water tanker) were among the five fire vehicles that attended.

It took about 2.5 hours to complete the incident, with no major damage to the overall structure.

Quesnel River Pulp is owned by Atlas Holdings of Alberta, operated by Millar Western Forest Products. It was, until recently, owned by West Fraser, but the sale was announced in September. Company and fire officials are investigating the cause.
