It was an icy weekend in Quesnel, especially at the hockey rink.
The Quesnel Kangaroos spent Saturday afternoon down at Spirit Square playing boot hockey with the families bustling about the downtown for Santa’s visit.
Then, it was off to the rink where they faced off against the visiting Smithers Steelheads in Central Interior Hockey League action. The Roos took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission, then added on for a 6-1 final to earn their second win of the season.
The Kangaroos carry that momentum into their next three games on the road before returning to West Fraser Centre for a two-game stand on Jan. 27 and 28. Their remaining schedule is:
Away versus Nechako: Jan. 6
Away versus Terrace: Jan. 20
Away versus Prince Rupert: Jan. 21
HOME hosting Hazelton: Jan. 27
HOME hosting Kitimat: Jan. 28
Away versus Williams Lake: Feb. 2
HOME hosting Nechako: Feb. 4
Playoffs to follow.
The Quesnel Minor Hockey Association was also involved as hosts of out-of-town teams, this past weekend. The city welcomed visiting House-level teams from Prince George, Mackenzie and Fort St. James in the U11 age bracket. Three local teams - Green Stars, Blue Barricades, Red Roosters - gave them their tournament challenge.
After all the three-day round robin ice chips settled, the Blue Barricades and Prince George played off for 5th and 6th place with Quesnel coming out on top, the Green Stars earned a trip to the bronze medal game versus Mackenzie where Mackenzie picked up the win, and Fort St. James earned a trip to the gold medal game to take on the Red Roosters. In the end, the Quesnel team prevailed and won the championship on home ice.
