FSJSS hosts ski and snowboard North Central Zone championships

FSJSS achieved high scores, securing multiple students spots at provincials

Fort St. James Secondary School hosted the annual North Central Zones at Murray Ridge on Feb. 5 and 6, featuring both ski and snowboard races over the two days.

A total of eight teams participated, with 75 racers in all. Among them were six students from Fort St. James Secondary School, including two female skiers and four male snowboarders.

Norah Shute achieved 10th place in girls’ skiing, earning her spot at the provincials, while the boys' snowboard team secured second place, also qualifying for the provincials.

The event relied on the support of 30 volunteers each day, including some experienced racers from Quesnel who brought essential equipment, alongside many locals who were new to the ski and snowboard racing scene.

Fort St. James coach Kaylee Walstrom shared her enthusiasm, stating, "Ski and Board has been one of my passions since I was on the team myself in high school. It’s a unique blend of sport, competition, outdoor recreation and camaraderie. It brings me joy to see young people in our community having the same wonderful experiences I had, and I believe it’s important to pass on the love and support I received from my own coaches.

Walstrom added the turnout for the event was a resounding success, and there are high hopes for hosting the Zones again in the near future.
