There were many standout moments in the swimming pool last weekend when the Quesnel Waverers Swim Club hosted the Waverers Gold Pan Invitational Meet.

Thirty-eight Waveriders competed in the meet, which was held Feb. 9-10 at the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre, and 19 won medals. Twenty-seven swimmers earned new personal best times at the meet.

Waveriders head coach Jeritt Brink was impressed by eight-year-old Elise Jonasson’s performance, and he thought Chloe Hopton was another standout.

“Chloe Hopton showed the pool just how butterfly is done, taking out the competition in her race by a whopping 12m or more,” he said.

The coach also singled out the club’s 10 & Under 100m Individual Medley swimmers, Memphis Swaan, Garrett Van Horne and Petra Peter, for “a fantastic showing in placing, but also in the keenness to learn all four strokes.”

“It’s important to do to balance muscles and reduce injury from repetition of the same stroke over and over while young,” he said.

Ten-year-old Memphis Swaan won gold medals in the 25m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 100m medley and silvers in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle, while nine-year-old Garrett Van Horne won three silver medals (25m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m medley) and one bronze (50m freestyle).
