The City of Quesnel today (Sept. 24) gave Notice of Election.

“As of 4:18 p.m. on Sept. 24, 2018, an Election by Acclamation and Voting is necessary to elect one Mayor, six Councillors and seven School Trustees. In conjunction with the election, the public can vote “yes” or “no” for the Assent Vote (New Public Works Facility),” reads a City of Quesnel news release.

The term of office will be for four years, starting November 2018.

Incumbent mayor Bob Simpson will be elected by acclamation, as the only candidate in the running.

Eleven candidates are up for city councillor seats, with six to be chosen on Oct. 20. Between the candidate declaration deadline and the notice of election, on candidate, Cody Dillabough, dropped out. He has not responded to a request for comment.

Councillor candidates include Tammy Burrows, Scott Elliott, Tony Goulet, Susan MacNeill, Ron Paull, Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, Martin Runge, Kyle Townsend, Mitch Vik, Lindsay Woods and Fritz Wyssen.

Candidates for school trustee include Wendy Clement, Howie Schonke, Roland Sawatsky, Julie-Anne Runge, David Chapman, Cyril Tobin, Tony Goulet and Gloria Jackson. Seven trustees will be elected on Oct. 20.

In addition to city council and school trustee candidates, the City of Quesnel is holding a referendum to ask residents if the City can borrow up to $8.5 million for the replacement of the Public Works Facility.

The following question will be submitted to the City of Quesnel electorate:

“Are you in favour of the City of Quesnel adopting City of Quesnel New Public Works Facility Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 1854 of 2018 which will authorize Council to borrow a sum not exceeding eight and half million dollars ($8,500,000), repayable over a period of no more than thirty (30) years, for the development and construction of a new Public Works Facility?”

The results of the Assent Vote will determine if the proposed bylaw will proceed for final adoption, or be defeated.

The full bylaw can be inspected at Quesnel City Hall, 410 Kinchant Street, during regular office hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
