This summer will see several celebrations and the re-opening of the Theatre Royal

Barkerville Historic Town and Park is returning in a big way this tourist season.

The national historic site east of Quesnel will open Saturday, June 4, and continue its award-winning historical interpretation program thanks to a $500,000 contribution from Osisko Development’s nearby Barkerville Gold Mines (BGM).

This is the second year in a row Osisko has provided funding towards Barkerville’s educational programming, which BGM president and CEO, Chris Lodder, said will support its living history presentations and the Theatre Royal.

The acclaimed Theatre Royal is set to re-open on Friday, July 1, as part of the park’s 2022 Dominion Day celebrations after having remained dark throughout the pandemic as its foundation underwent extensive renovations and archaeological excavations.

In addition to the Theatre Royal’s grand re-opening on July 1st, Barkerville said it plans to reintroduce its popular Indigenous Celebration on Monday, Aug. 1, and Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday, Sept. 3.

“As things begin to re-open for us all, Barkerville is happy to return to the larger-scale educational presentations that we are known for,” stated Kate Cox, Barkerville Historic Town and Park’s CEO.

“Over the past two years, we have learned a lot and will bring those lessons with us as we move forward into 2022 and beyond.”

The 2022 interpretative season runs from Saturday, June 4, to Sunday, Sept. 11.
