BC Angus Association hosts annual general meeting, field day in Quesnel

Cattle were on display at Alex Fraser Park

The BC Angus Association (BCAA) was in Quesnel where they held their annual general meeting along with a field day, silent auction and barbeque on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Live cattle from BC Angus members across the region were also displayed at Alex Fraser Park.

“The annual general meeting takes place every year and has been in Kamloops or the Kamloops area for the last couple of years, so this year the board decided to move it around the province,” said BCAA president Bob Miller.

The field day and live cattle display coinciding with the annual general meeting was a new venture intended to create breed and individual herd promotion and fellowship and camaraderie, combining Angus association business, the BCAA noted on its website.

While no resolutions were passed at the annual general meeting, Miller said the BCAA now has a full board of directors.

“Our bylaws allow for nine directors,” he added. “For quite some time we’ve never had a full slate of directors, and this year we have three new directors coming on board.”

Reelected was Lorraine Sanford with Nine Mile Ranch on Blackwater Road, who was pleased to see the all-day event in Quesnel.

This year’s guest speaker was Chad Vandermeer with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health. Tom deWaal of Prince George with the Canadian Angus Association was also on hand to answer questions and concerns regarding national programs.

Following the annual general meeting and field day, the BCAA Board of Directors met Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Alex Fraser Park Agricultural Centre for their annual planning meeting.

“We’re all concerned as producers about the escalating costs of operating but fortunately, so far this year, and we’re just starting into what we call the fall run, and we’ve seen above-average prices,” Miller said.

Miller is also the general manager of Ownership Identification Inc., which is B.C.’s brand registration and inspection program actively involved in the inspection of livestock for lawful possession prior to transportation, sale or slaughter.

He hails from Manitoba, where he grew up on his family’s farm raising purebred cattle.
