The cover has been opened on the annual event that gets book lovers in a happy flap.

The Quesnel Public Library’s book sale is on now, operated by the Friends Of The Quesnel Library not-for-profit organization.

“It’s the biggest fundraiser the Friends does all year, so it’s pretty important in funding the Friends group and all they do for the library,” said Heather Lee, the chief librarian for Quesnel. “The money is used for a number of things, but most often the Friends usually use the money to purchase items for the library that are outside of the usual funding we receive from the Cariboo Regional District.”

Some recent examples of the Friends’ contributions include paying for half of the new shelving for the significant paperback Romance collection, purchasing a commercial-grade laminating machine and refills on an ongoing basis, rolling mail carts for staff use, purchasing prizes for children’s programming on an ongoing basis, a brand new projector for public presentations, a portable public address system for presenters, and a large set of folding chairs for the program room.

“They’ve really purchased some amazing things for the library that we would not have otherwise been able to obtain,” said Lee.

While the world braced for a collapse in the book industry, when reading technology was first introduced, the opposite has occurred. People are buying books like never before, making the library and the book sale particularly important for the Quesnel area.

“I know I love a book sale, and I’m hoping lots of people in the community do too,” said Lee, noting the only thing that slowed the book sale’s momentum was the pandemic, and that comeback is underway. “I’m hoping by running the book sale for two weeks and allowing people access to the sale during all library opening hours during that two weeks will allow the greatest number of people to make it to the sale.”

The theme for this year’s event is “a book is a dream you hold in your hands” and it is on now until Sept. 29 during regular library hours. Payment is by donation.
