Quesnel City Council adopted a bylaw to authorize the Elliott Street Supportive Housing Agreement at last night’s (Oct. 2) meeting.

The housing agreement has been entered into by the City of Quesnel and Provincial Rental Housing Corporation, which is part of the provincial body B.C. Housing.

The final signing of the housing agreement is one of the steps towards the supportive housing development potentially becoming a reality.

The agreement was amended after a Sept. 4 council meeting, and now provides the City with some tools for recourse if the operators of the proposed housing unit on Elliott Street do not meet the requirements around the usage of the property, services offered, and ensuring parking generated by the facility remains off the street.

It also requires the operators of the unit to adhere to the Good Neighbour Agreement, a communication tool between the proposed operators, the City and the neighbourhood. The Good Neighbour Agreement was endorsed by the City of Quesnel and the RCMP at a meeting last month.

The operator of the housing development, Quesnel Shelter and Support Society, is still required to submit a development permit before additional bylaws related to zoning can be completed to advance the project.
