It’s been a quieter year for the Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department, which fire chief David Sugden attributes to people being more fire-aware.

“People are concerned about wildfires and are really tuned in, now,” said Sugden, who noted they were busy in the spring, but things have slowed since then.

Sugden commented on the improvement of fire prevention and training and reminded people that it’s that time of year to clean out your chimneys.

“It should be done every year for insurance purposes,” along with safety, said Sugden.

While the year has been quieter for the fire department, firefighters remain busy, all volunteers with additional jobs.

“It’s a big commitment on their part.”

Sugden said the firefighters do it to support the community, along with it being a cool job.

“Everybody loves us,” he laughed.

The Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 16 members alternating swing, day and night shifts.

They are always looking for new recruits. Those interested can reach out to fire chief David Sugden at 250-925-4213.
