B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking into the injury of a person who was in an RCMP detachment cell in Quesnel.

In a news release, the IIO said the person who made the allegation stated Mounties responded to a call of concern for their wellbeing at a home in Quesnel Sept. 8, 2024 at around 2:30 p.m.

The person reported they were injured while in RCMP custody that evening.

The IIO was notified about the incident on Feb. 13, 2025 and has started an investigation. The investigation will determine if the injuries the person had meet the threshold of serious harm defined by the Police Act and if there was a connection to police actions, or inaction.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
