May is FireSmart Month

Is your property fire smart?

Summer is right around the corner, and it’s essential to be proactive in reducing the risk of wildfire damage to property.

The City of Quesnel’s Forestry Initiatives Program is encouraging residents to participate in FireSmart Awareness Month.

“Whether doing regular yard maintenance or making large-scale changes during renovations or landscaping, residents can make choices that will help protect their homes from wildfire,” reads a news release.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWF) notes it had faced a tremendously challenging fire season last year, with 1,642 wildfires in B.C. burning 869,279 hectares.

Since April 1, 2022, there has already been 100 wildfires across the province.

During this month, Quesnel and area residents can enter to win a $100 gift card to a local business by visiting an information booth at the Quesnel Recreation Centre and learning about FireSmart.

The booth will also be available at various other locations around town including the Quesnel Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May, 14, and the Quesnel Outdoor Tradeshow on Saturday, May 28.
