Shopping hours will be extended in downtown Quesnel as merchants offer customers a jump start on their Christmas shopping with one day of special deals.

Moonlight Madness is set to take place Friday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

”Last year was fantastic,” said Quesnel Downtown Association president Gilbert Schotel.

“We had tremendous support from our local community, so we’re hoping to repeat that and give back some great savings.”

Schotel said it is vital to support local businesses any time of year.

Changing health and safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have challenged businesses, although all have stepped up to follow the efforts to keep people safe.

“Getting the stock here has been challenging for most of us, but most of the merchants have been proactive and finding new sources for what they need,” Schotel added.

Three gift baskets stuffed with donations by Quesnel downtown merchants will be up for grabs on Nov. 19. Schotel said the draw will be open until 11 p.m., and you do not have to be present to win.

The next event before Christmas by the Quesnel Downtown Association will be a Santa Extravaganza scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4 in Spirit Square from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Children’s games and hot chocolate, and possibly s’mores, will be available, with Santa’s elves coming out to provide a helping hand.
