Students attending the new Quesnel Junior School (QJS) will have a few more days of vacation before returning to the classroom.
Quesnel School District superintendent Dan Lowndes confirmed the opening has been delayed by a couple of days, meaning most students won’t start classes until Sept. 15.
“Just over the last two years on the build, the project managers have been dealing with supply issues and staffing issues like every other sector, but that being said, right up until last Thursday, we were on schedule,” Lowndes said.
“So there were a few things that came in last minute that shifted that schedule slightly.”
Staff will be at the new school starting Monday, Sept. 12, getting ready to welcome Grade 8 students on Sept. 14, followed by Grade 9 students on Sept. 15.

Lowndes says work on the school will continue throughout the evenings and weekends, which will not impact student attendance.
“I am excited that we will have an open house for the new QJS build shortly after school start-up to allow the public to come in and see the building because it is a spectacular build,” Lowndes added. “It’s amazing for our community to have.”
Classes for other students in the Quesnel School District start Wednesday, Sept. 7.
The BC Government has recently provided the district with $357, 657 in one-time funding to help the district expand school meal programs, ensure students have the necessary school supplies, and cover any additional fees so students in need won’t be left out of activities such as field trips.
