The Palliative Care Board donated two care carts to the palliative care unit at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital in Quesnel.
The care carts each include a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and a small radio.
Melody Moore, the clinical practice leader for acute care and a nurse at G.R. Baker, says the care carts are for the families of those in palliative care. “So that they don’t have to leave their loved ones to get a cup of coffee or to eat. It allows them to stay with [their loved one] as they’re passing,” says Moore.
“And,” added Dwayne McKerlie, a nurse and liaison to the Palliative Care Board, “give them something to listen to.”
Moore and McKerlie were there to accept the donation from Louise Scott, the president of the Palliative Care Board, and board members Carol Weremy and Barb Watson.
The board bought the items for the care carts from Willis Harper Home Hardware, who they say “generously” sold them at a lower price.
The care carts, which cost approximately $1,200, are meant to “make it just a little more homey” for the patients and families, says Watson.
