There might have been no parade but pride was still on full display in Quesnel last month.

Rocks were painted with pride colors and positive messages by several schools before the summer break, with students even placing rainbow-colored handprints throughout one school.

The Pride Rocks! initiative followed the Quesnel Pride Society teaming up with the Prince George Pride Society which did their own last year.

“We kind of took the idea down here in Quesnel, and we started with the schools and it was a huge hit,” said Quesnel Pride Society vice president Ashley Rodgers.

“All the students really liked it, and the teachers got to have some really good discussions.”

Kits containing rainbow-colored paints and inks and sealant for the rocks to be placed outdoors were provided by the Quesnel Pride Society, who Rodgers said is fortunate to have a member of the Quesnel School District on their board.

They had reached out to the district and attracted the interest of teachers at schools in Quesnel, Bouchie Lake and Kersley.

Riverview Elementary School won a Booster Juice day through a contest that was extended to community members.

Rodgers encourages everyone to follow them on Facebook at Quesnel Pride and Community Outreach or on Instagram at Quesnel Pride.

“We’re very excited for next year,” Rodgers added, noting the two-year hiatus of Quesnel’s pride parade as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re hoping to have a huge celebration next year.”
