Quesnel residents woke to eerie grey-pink skies this morning (Aug. 14), with the smoke from nearby wildfires extremely close and thick in the air and ash visibly falling.
The forecast today is for highs of 26 degrees Celsius; however, the temperature so far remains a cooler 14 degrees this morning, with the thick smoke blocking the sun’s rays.
Environment Canada is predicting southeasterly winds this afternoon and evening, but widespread smoke is predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.
There is currently no rain in Quesnel’s forecast, with highs for the week holding steady at around 25 degrees Celsius.
Quesnel is currently at a very high risk rating on Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index, the highest risk available on the scale. The Air Quality Health Index may reduce down from 10+ to 9 by tomorrow afternoon.
Environment Canada’s special air quality statement remains in effect in Quesnel and Williams Lake. People with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, infants, children and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
