Victoria-based artist Everett Wong is bringing his work to the Quesnel Art Gallery for his exhibition: Dagashi.
"Everett uses everyday materials—paper and fabric—to explore the experiences and values of those who grow up between cultures," The Art Gallery said in a news release. "His work reflects the feeling of both witnessing and being part of the way Asian aesthetics are simplified, commercialized, and sometimes fetishized, all within a world that continues to grapple with racial and social issues."
Dagashi will run from April 10 to May 8 at the Quesnel Art Gallery with an opening at the gallery (500 North Star Road) on April 10 at 7 p.m.
Wong's work embraces a cuteness and over the top aesthetic to examine what it means to belong in both Western and Eastern worlds at the same time.
"With its bold and energetic designs, Everett’s work invites viewers to question these dynamics while also offering a sense of optimism. By pulling together familiar Asian-inspired symbols and imagery into a single, exaggerated form, Dagashi becomes a striking yet contradictory presence," the release said. Wong's work is described as both vibrant and hallow while being carrying deep meaning.
