The Quesnel Cariboo Observer has been named as finalists in several categories of this year’s Ma Murray Awards by the B.C. and Yukon Community News Media Association (BCYCNA).

The awards have been hosted for nearly a century celebrating excellence in community news media, including writing, photography, advertising and more.

Observer publisher Tracey Roberts said her team is honoured to be a finalist in the general excellence category.

“We are very dedicated to putting out a good quality newspaper for our readers each week to enjoy,” she said.

Quesnel Cariboo Observer editor Cassidy Dankochik has also been recognized in the category of breaking news video for his work during the West Fraser log yard fire.

In addition, his photo featuring Jake Jasper taking a tumble during the saddle bronc at the Quesnel Rodeo Club’s event last July is up for a sports photo award.

“It’s an honour just to be nominated in the general excellence category, especially for the year of 2021,” Dankochik said.

Dankochik noted that huge debt of gratitude is owed to the Quesnel Cariboo Observer’s layout team in 100 Mile House, Williams Lake Tribune regional editor Angie Mindus for helping edit the paper and the rest of his colleagues in editorial teams across the region who assisted the Observer as they searched for another full-time member throughout 2021.

The 2022 Ma Murray award winners will be announced at the River Rock Casino in Richmond on Saturday, May 14.
