The mascot of Quesnel Junior School (QJS) is getting a new identity.

The new nickname “River Hawks” was officially revealed Friday, April 8, on Facebook.

It was one of four mascots selected by committee members who had combed through student and community submissions before a parent feedback survey was launched.

“It used to be that our three senior schools in Quesnel were the Maple Drive Raiders, the Correlieu Clan, and the QJS Spartans, and we’re the only one still in that old domain,” said Principal Trish Simpson.

“So we’re ready for change as we move into the new school.”

Correlieu Secondary School changed its logo and team name to the Coyotes in 2018 following a school-wide vote.

Due to declining enrollment, Maple Drive Junior School closed more than 15 years ago.

It was renovated several years ago as a short-term solution for students after structural issues were found at QJS, and construction at the site of a new modern facility continues.

Simpson said Jen-Col Construction has been phenomenal and continues to do its best after challenges such as COVID-19 and flooding in B.C.’s Lower Mainland and Interior.

Other mascots considered were Wolverines, Trail Blazers and SUS, which is Carrier for bear.

Designs for the new mascot, a nickname for Osprey commonly found soaring high above local rivers and lakes, will be accepted until Wednesday, April 27.

They can be submitted to the QJS office or emailed to QJS@sd28.bc.ca.
