A former College of New Caledonia (CNC) student in Quesnel has once again been crowned a national champion in industrial mechanics.

Dusty Cathcart recently claimed gold at the Skills Canada National Competition held in Vancouver late last month.

It is Cathcart’s second win as national champion in industrial mechanics.

He currently works at West Fraser-Quesnel River Pulp which took him on as a fourth-year millwright apprentice.

His gold medal win meant he was eligible to compete at the 46th Worldskills Competition in Shanghai, China which was officially cancelled Tuesday, May 31, due to ongoing pandemic prevention and control restrictions in China.

“It is with deep disappointment that we announce the cancellation of WorldSkills Shanghai 2022. Looking ahead to the future, we have no doubt that when China hosts a WorldSkills Competition, it will be extraordinary,” said Worldskills president and board chair Chris Humphries in a news release.

“We are grateful for the time and resources that the competitors and the committed supporters, employers, experts, and partners have invested in preparation for the event. Alongside WorldSkills members and partners, we are working actively to develop alternative competitive arrangements to celebrate your skills in 2022. Look for announcements by the end of June 2022.”

College of New Caledonia Quesnel graduate and millwright Alaura Jaggernath meanwhile won a bronze medal at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters National Competition in Thunder Bay, Ont.

CNC congratulated Jaggernath and Cathcart in separate Facebook posts and said it is proud of their hard work and dedication.
