The 2023 edition of the Quesnel Rotary Club’s bus trip to Barkerville was completed, this weekend.

There were 139 participants, this year. Nineteen volunteers from the Rotary group helped organize it, plus care-aids, bus drivers and Grade 11 student supporter Hannah.

“When we found we could not get charter buses, we asked Rocky Mountaineer if they could help with a couple of their coaches, and right away they saved the day,” said lead organizer Ron Paull. “Rocky Mountaineer’s luxury coaches, including drivers Dave and Dan who volunteered their services, along with a mini-bus from Dunrovin Park Lodge were all filled, and the weather was perfect.”

The Quesnel Legion was the morning meeting spot, with Quesnel Old Time Fiddlers performing a send-off. Box lunches were made at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, served in Barkerville’s Mitlite Iskum “gathering place” pavilion. The entourage was treated to a First Nations drumming circle led by the Xatsull and Shuswap Nations and Theatre Royal’s afternoon show.

Rotary also thanks the seniors themselves who “passed the hat” and took up a generous collection in aid of the club’s local community projects.

Quesnel Rotary president Marg Anderson thanked the seniors’ expedition committee and all helpers. “As Quesnel Rotary’s longest running and much anticipated community service event, this 58th annual outing is a wonderfully fitting way for our club to recognize and thank our seniors for their contributions to the betterment of our community. This is what helps make Quesnel and area the best place to call home.”
