One of Quesnel’s firehalls has moved from downtown Quesnel to the old public works building in the Johnston Loop.
Fire Hall #1 is beginning major renovations, expected to cost over $4 million. Over half of the cost is covered by a provincial and federal grant, with the rest covered by city reserves.
The offices, firefighting equipment and fire suppression vehicles have all moved to the new location. No trucks were present in the hall garages on Tuesday, March 29.
The additional money put into the project by city council includes $600,000 for soft costs and general construction overhead, $400,000 for exterior upgrades to the buildings, $200,000 for accessibility upgrades and $300,000 for additional upgrades, including better amenities for female firefighters.
The renovations are expected to be completed in early 2023. The city is reminding drivers to yield to any vehicle with flashing lights entering or exiting the area.
