Mounties say a mechanical failure may have led to a fatal collision on Highway 97 Wednesday, June 14 that claimed the life of one man and sent a woman to hospital.
Quesnel RCMP and BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) Williams Lake responded to a report of a fatal collision between a commercial Ford F-150 pickup truck and a Dodge Ram pickup truck that had been hauling a trailer.
Police received the call for help at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Highway 97 near Lansdowne Road south of Quesnel.
“One male driver is deceased and a female passenger was transported to hospital with injuries. The occupants of the Ford pickup were uninjured. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it appears at this time that a mechanical failure may have contributed to the collision,” noted RCMP Cpl. Mike Moore of BC Highway Patrol.
BCHP–Quesnel has conduct of the investigation with engagement from WorksafeBC, Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement, and BCHP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services.
Highway 97 was closed with alternating traffic for some time and re-opened at approximately 9:40 p.m. The investigation is in the very early stages and information is subject to change. No further information is available at this time, said police.
The collision is the second one in two days that closed Highway 97 between Williams Lake and Quesnel.
