Trails closed, properties evacuated, as Quesnel declares landslide risk

The city of Quesnel is declaring a state of emergency due to the risk of a landslide near Panorama Ridge in South Quesnel.

The city has issued an evacuation order for 505 Panorama Ridge, and surrounding properties on on an evacuation alert. As part of the alert, the trails below Panorama ridge have also been closed.

“The state of local emergency allows the city to respond to the threat of land erosion which could potentially result in the destruction of infrastructure & property, and create risks to public safety,” a news release from the city reads.

Potential land movement is being monitored at the nearby Carson Elementary School on Graham Avenue, where the city says land slippage happened outside of the school’s field.

“To ensure public safety, Residents are being asked to stay away from emergency affected areas and obey all warning and hazard signs for their own safety and for the safety of City crews,” the release notes.

Residents witnessing any land movement are asked to call city hall 250-992-2111 or Director of Emergency Services,Sylvain Gauthier, 250-991-9738.

Residents are also encouraged to register for the the Cariboo Chilcotin Emergency Notification System to receive updates on evacuation alerts and orders member.everbridge.net/index/453003085612292#/signup.
