Trio seeks mayor's chair in Quesnel

Meanwhile, 10 candidates will vie for six council seats at city hall on Nov. 19.

The sitting mayor has two challengers and there are 10 candidates vying for six city council seats in Quesnel in the Nov. 19 election.

Nomination deadline arrived at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, with a total of 13 aspirants seeking seats in city hall.

Mayor Mary Sjostrom is seeking her second term at the helm of the city and is being challenged by three-term incumbent councillor Ron Paull and former councillor (2005-2008) Ron Craigmyle.

Of the 10 councillor candidates, three are incumbents — Mike Cave, Laurey-Anne Roodenberg and Sushil Thapar.

Seven non-incumbents — John Brisco, Ed Coleman, Cory Delves, Scott Elliot, Trevor Guldbransen, Paul Kainth and Mitch Vik — are also seeking seats.

Paull's mayoral bid and the decisions of incumbent councillors Coralee Oakes and Peter Couldwall to not seek re-election means Quesnel council will have at least three new councillors at the table when the new group meets for the inaugural meeting in early December, a couple of weeks after the civic election.

Candidates have until Oct. 21 to withdraw their names from the ballot.

The Nov. 19 civic election will result in a three-year term at city hall, with municipal elections being held every three years.
