RCMP target drunk drivers

Police across the province are maintaining some drivers are simply not getting the message when it comes to drinking and driving – and Q-Town residents are no exception.

Quesnel RCMP were out in full force this holiday season targeting impaired drivers. Quesnel RCMP and Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services took a total of 13 impaired drivers off the roads this holiday season.

Between Dec. 1, 2012 and Jan 2, 2013, police in Quesnel issued a total of four 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions, issued two 24-hour prohibitions to drivers who were impaired by drugs, issued one 90-day administrative driving prohibition to a snowmobile operator and arrested six people who are now face Criminal Code charges for impaired driving offences.

“The RCMP remain committed to keeping our streets safe from impaired drivers every day of the year,” Vrolyk said.

“Police in Quesnel will be conducting regular traffic stops and will be setting up CounterAttack check-stops throughout the year to ensure that our roads are the safest they can be. If you plan to drink, don’t drive.”

Province-wide police laid 961 impaired related charges from Dec. 2, 2012 to Jan. 2, 2013.

And while this number is down from last year’s figure of 1,434, more than 1,419 people were ticketed for the use of electronic device while driving and 213 drivers were caught excessive speeding (doing 40 km/hour or more over the posted limit.)
