Cheers could be heard inside Quesnel Safeway early Saturday, Dec. 11, as Kim Tipold raced down the aisles.

Tipold had five minutes to fill shopping carts with what she could after winning the eighth annual raffle fundraiser supporting St. Ann’s Catholic School.

Cheering Tipold on at 6:30 a.m. as a timer counted down the minutes and seconds were her two children, niece, sister, mother and uncle.

“That was a good workout,” she said after her time was up.

After her three grocery carts of items were rung up by assistant manager Chris Davey, Tipold walked home with $1,446.61 in groceries.

Tipold said she had completed her Christmas shopping well before the five-minute spree and that the items she selected were things that one has to usually buy, such as toilet paper and laundry detergent, even if they don’t like to due to the costs.

Tickets for the shopping spree raffle fundraiser were sold in November.

Jacci Leggett and Rene Tudhope guessed the raffle pulled in more than $5,000 for the school.

“Some people support it every year, and some people are new and it’s their first time hearing about it,” Leggett said, adding they are grateful for the support of the community and Safeway.

Store manager Gloria Moskalyk was unsure of what to expect during the shopping spree but said it was exciting to see the look on Tipold’s face and her family’s as they cheered her on.

Rules were in place to prevent Tipold from hitting up just the meat department and had limited her to two of each item.

“I honestly would love to do it again,” Moskalyk said.

“It was a lot of fun and it was a great fundraiser for them [St. Ann’s] and for the store, it’s a great idea,” she added.

“I had fun watching it.”
