With the Williams Lake Stampede fast approaching, the RCMP is reminding the public that the Williams Lake RCMP detachment will have a proactive presence in and around the Stampede Grounds.
“The highly visible presence will work to ensure the safety of all taking part in and enjoying all that the Stampede has to offer. There will be no tolerance toward anyone jeopardizing or likely to jeopardize the safety of others,” noted the release.
Stampede president Court Smith said organizers are happy to hear the police plan to have an obvious presence during the events.
“We have met with them a few times leading up to Stampede and they have discussed that with us,” Smith said.
This year’s Stampede will take place Thursday, June 29 through Sunday, July 2.
Last year on the final day of the Williams Lake Stampede Sunday, July 3 2022, two people were shot near the entrance to the grandstands.
Jordell Anthony Sellars, 33 at the time, was arrested on scene and charged a week later.
To date, a trial date has not been set for Sellars who is charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life.
His next court date is Wednesday, June 14, 2023 in Williams Lake.
