ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE

CanLava Mining Corporation has submitted an application to the Director for a new authorization to discharge untreated contaminated soil to a lined landfill and associated treated leachate effluent and landfill gas emissions. The sources of the soil discharges will be of non-hazardous waste classification.

The facility will be situated on DISTRICT LOT 12927, BEING KLARA IC MINERAL CLAIM, CARIBOO DISTRICT (52.9295, -123.7453), located within the British Columbia (BC) Cariboo Regional District, approximately 12 km west of the Nazko community and 3 km southeast of Fishpot Lake. The landfill will utilize an unused portion of the CanLava Mine (approx. 275 m SW) site, a lava rock quarry that is currently operational at the location.

The landfill application includes a proposal to accept up to 40,000 tonnes per year (approx. 22,222 m3/year) of contaminated soils that will originate from construction sites throughout the Lower Mainland. A summary of discharges is as follows:

• Soil: the site will accept soil with quality exceeding BC Contaminated Sites Regulations (BC Reg. 375/96, last amended July 7, 2021, Schedule 3.1, for “Industrial” standards). However, soils defined as “Hazardous Waste,” per Hazardous Waste Regulation (BC Reg. 63/88, last amended March I l, 2021, Part 1) will not be accepted. Typical soil contaminants may include petroleum and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals, volatile organic compounds, phenolics, sodium and chloride, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene.
• Leachate: leachate may contain contaminants from the soil and the maximum predicted leachate production under wet weather conditions of leachate to be conveyed to the leachate treatment system is estimated to be up to 39,906 m3/yr. All leachate will either be evaporated using turbine-style evaporators and dust control systems or treated by sand infiltration and granular activated carbon to remove solids and contaminants before being discharged to swale ditching for infiltration
• to ground and/or surface water. Discharges will conform to the British Columbia Approved Water Quality Guidelines (BCAWQGs) for drinking water use and aquatic life (chronic) protection for contaminants of concern.
• Landfill gas: it is expected that the contaminated soils at the landfill will generate minimal quantities of landfill gas (less than 1,000 tonnes of methane/year). The gas will be collected via a passive gas collection system underneath the cover system. Testing will be conducted on the gas once the landfill is in operation to confirm that gas components do not pose a human health risk. If the levels of organic vapours and/or methane are determined to be within WorkSafe BC acceptable exposure limits to protect workers, gas will be passively vented to the atmosphere. If vapour concentrations exceed WorkSafe BC exposure limits, the gas will be collected from landfill vents and combusted in an appropriate thermal oxidizer or flare system, depending upon gas composition.

The identity of any respondents and the contents of anything submitted in relation to this application will become part of the public record.
