It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. George Smith after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Heather (nee Hunter) & children, Colin, Jacqueline and Lynda, 5 grandchildren and great grandson, Nash.
George was born in Scotland and attended Aberdeen University, where he met his wife Heather, graduating in medicine in 1962. He became the only GP on the remote island of Yell in the Shetland Islands where he also acted as dentist and veterinarian, resulting in many great stories and memories. He later moved to Lerwick and then in 1979 moved with his family to Quesnel where he practiced as a GP at the Holley Clinic until 1989, bringing into the world many of Quesnel's current population. He then became the company physician for West Fraser Timber and brought his much-respected medical knowledge and great patient rapport with him as he travelled throughout BC and Alberta until his retirement in 2015.
His later years were spent traveling the world with Heather, playing golf, curling, and spending time with the grandkids. George and his good friends enjoyed solving all the world's problems every Thursday morning at the Tim Horton's in Quesnel.
George passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the early hours of October 9th 2021. He leaves a great legacy of kindness and compassion with all that knew him.
There will be no service at George's request. Donations to the Prince George Hospice would be much appreciated.
