Helen Caswell

June 19, 2006

Helen was born at Hillhead Auchlameedie farm near Strichen, Aberdeenshire on September 16th, 1935 and educated at Strichen Primary School and Fraserburgh Academy.

She attained her M.A. from Aberdeen University in 1956 and proceeded to teach at Fettercairn School and later Hayfield Primary School, Glasgow.

She emigrated to Canada in 1960 and taught at Weston Elementary School, Winnipeg. During this time she attained her B.ED from the University of Manitoba, awarded in 1965.

While on a working holiday in the antipodes she taught at Taita and Naenae Intermediate Schools in the Hutt valley, New Zealand where she met her husband Jack Caswell. They married in 1968.

Arriving back in Canada in 1969 she was employed in School District #28 for the rest of her career, part time, as librarian at Barlow Creek Elementary School.

At Helen’s wish there will not be a funeral and her ashes will be interred with her ancestors at New Pitsligo cemetery, near her birthplace. The family has been touched by the many sympathy cards, sent by friends and colleagues, that testify to the regard in which she was held; the cards will accompany the ashes.

She is mourned by her husband Jack, daughter Lesley (Ken Murphy) and innumerable relatives and friends in the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand.

The family wish to thank the Home Care Unit for its highly professional and excellent support during Helen’s final days at home. Helen supported the Catscan project.

Helen died June 19th, 2006 - a kind, gentle and caring person has joined the great majority.
