It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Hilma Joan ‘Johnson’ Huxley on July 2, 2016 at the age of 92. Born in Encombe, B.C., Joan was a pioneer in the community of Quesnel and was an active volunteer up to the day of her passing. Predeceased by: her parents, Emil and Hilda Johnson; first husband, Korey Hegseth; second husband, Duane Huxley; brothers, George, Vernon and Eugene; sisters, Hazel Crotteau and Queen Stoner; and son in law, Jim Hildreth.

Joan’s memory lives on in her two surviving family members - daughter, Koreen Hildreth (Johnny Mattice) and Vanessa Hildreth (Lloyd Compeau) as well as many friends and community members.

Joan put the needs of others before her own and could always be counted on to do anything necessary, from fund raising to clean up, whatever was needed. Honoured as Quesnel Volunteer Citizen of the Year in 1985, Joan’s contributions to the community are all around us. Always a lady, but a force to be reckoned with, “Mother Huxley” forever changed the face of Quesnel. While she leaves behind a space that can never truly be filled again, we take comfort in knowing that she is undoubtedly off to her next project, wherever it may be.
