In Loving Memory ~

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, Mary Helena Rigsby, on February 16, 2024.

Pre-deceased by her loving husband George and parents John and Mary Lambourne, she is survived by her son, Justin (Silvana), granddaughters Emma and Abigail and daughter Sara.

Mary was born in Watford, England, an only daughter, where she grew up under the stresses of World War II. At the age of 15, she left high school to work in a factory assembling aircraft engines and other military hardware, assisting in the British war effort. From that date on there was no small engine she couldn't fix.

In the late 1940's, she met George at a party, that would commence a loving relationship that lasted over 60 years. Married in 1951, Mary followed George to Quesnel, B.C. where he helped found a CA firm. Once the shock of moving from a bustling London suburb to the wilderness climes of central British Columbia had worn off, Mary found her stride.

Embracing the northern Canadian lifestyle, Mary became an adept hunter, fisherwoman, Little Theatre actress and self-taught gourmet cook. She could clean a grouse, duck, goose and steelhead faster than most men from the Quesnel Rod & Gun Club.

The Fall game dinners she and George hosted were legendary and the parties that rocked "105" Leonard Street were emblematic of the swinging 60's and 70's. Her favorite show in those days was Laugh-In, and Cutty Sark became her go-to beverage.

Mary was no nonsense and strict, a devout Catholic and a loving mother and loyal friend. As a volunteer, she sat on the G.R Baker Memorial Hospital Board for many years. Her life changed suddenly when George passed away in 2010, and she moved to the Comox Valley to live with Justin and Silvana.

Turning 90, she moved into the Comox Valley Seniors Village where she began a new life.

The Rigsby Family would like to thank Dr's Howard, Nasager, Kelly, Woods and all the nursing staff and care aids on Ward 3C of the Comox Valley Hospital. Your compassionate care will never be forgotten!

A funeral mass will be held Monday, February 26, 2024, at 11:00 am, at Christ the King Church in Courtenay. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BCSPCA or St. Vincent de Paul would be appreciated.
