Michael Dewain Collins

January 29, 2005

Michael Dewain Collins passed away on January 29, 2005.

Mike was born on September 24, 1970 in Quesnel, B.C. at G.R. Baker Hospital.

He grew up in a logging family with many of his first years spent on his grandfather’s and grandmother’s dairy farm.

Mike attended Pinecrest Elementary and Quesnel Secondary Schools. He played hockey, soccer, baseball and skied throughout his youth.

From the age of 14, Mike worked many summers with his dad’s logging company.

After grade twelve, he started lifeguarding and instructing swimming, along with playing junior hockey with the Quesnel Millionaires.

When junior hockey ended, Mike packed up and played in the semi-pro hockey system for the next five years.

Working as a lift operator at the Apex Ski Hill, teaching Summer Hockey Schools in Colorado and Quesnel, to working on the set of J Crew in Florida, these were a few of Mike’s experiences on his work resume, but he always came back to logging and Quesnel.

Between his logging career, Mike traveled to warmer places. He took up surfing in Mexico, California, Australia and Indonesia.

With his open and humorous personality, many doors opened that might have been closed.

Throughout Mike’s life he was always counted on for helping or lending a hand to his family and friends.

A memorial service was held on February 4 at the Northstar Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Evans officiating.

Pallbearers were Rico Celli, Micky Keen, Lance Ketter, Wade Parker, Lucas Miller and Matt VanHorlick.

Mike is survived by his parents Gary and Kit Collins, sisters Jennifer and Jaidine, nieces Brittney and Raechel, grandmother Phyllis Miller, grandfather Raymond Collins, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Mike was predeceased by his grandmother Gladys Collins (1970) and grandfather Alec Miller (1980).

Mike has left many wonderful memories for the family to keep in their hearts, and we will use these memories to fill the huge hole he has left in our lives with his parting.

The family has asked those wishing to make a donation in Mike’s memory may do so to the Cat Scan Fund Raising Committee, 543 Front St., Quesnel, B.C. V2J 2K7.

We, as Mike’s family wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all that have come to us with your love and kindness. You have overwhelmed us with the support we have received.
