Letter: Governments need to get priorities straight

Editor,

Hard to understand why the local television and print medias are making such a huge deal about the legalization of cannabis.

Do they think the general public is going to rush out to get some pot now that it is legal? I think not.

Pot has been available to anyone who wants it through any number of friends for the past 40-plus years. This whole mania is an absolute joke, pushed into the forefront by the government’s wanting to create another tax.

It is ludicrous to think our seniors and school children will now be seeking out any of the hundreds of ‘brands’ that have been readily available for years. Now our police forces have to try to determine if someone is ‘impaired’ by alcohol or weed? Maybe it’s time to check our priorities.

Weed? Or maybe the fact we have more and more homeless people living in deplorable conditions, in tents or simply sleeping in doorways wrapped up in a blanket. Temperatures are now dipping to freezing. Our fat and happy governments need to address this issue now and find a place for our less fortunate human beings to be warm and safe.
