You can take the reporter out of Manitoba, but you can’t really take the Manitoba out of the reporter.
It’s with bittersweet feelings I am announcing I will no longer be the editor of the Quesnel Cariboo Observer. I will be moving back to Manitoba to become the sports editor at The Carillon in Steinbach, Man.
Ever since I began in journalism by freelancing for my hometown newspaper, I dreamed of working full-time as a sports reporter. Over the years I had given up on that dream, considering how few opportunities for dedicated sports reporters there were, and the harsh competition there is for them.
But when I saw a sports editor position open up in an area I extensively worked inside in previous years, including broadcasting junior C hockey games in the region, I knew it was now or never for my sports reporting dreams.
Working in Quesnel has been a privilege I have immensely enjoyed. The community here is so collaborative, with so many people always willing to help local initiatives.
I still think of Quesnel as an urban centre, but it still feels more like a small town, and I have been happy to play a small part in that.
On a personal note, I’ve loved living in an area where a nature path in the Riverwalk is so easily accessible and enjoyable.
