Successful summer

Quesnel unit gears up for Cops for Cancer Tour

It has been a fairly quiet couple of months at our Quesnel Unit office on Front Street.  Thank you to the office volunteers who have kept the office open from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. weekdays throughout the summer.  Beginning Sept. 6, the office will again be open from 10 a.m. – 3 pm weekdays.  New office volunteers and other volunteers, are always needed.

Although the office has been fairly quiet, other volunteers have been busy through the summer.  The Third Annual Amazing Race was another amazing success, and raised $7,000, which will be shared between the Canadian Cancer Society and the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Association.  Thanks to those who helped organize the event and those who helped on the day.  Thanks also to the participants.  A great time was had by all.

Sept. 14, the Cops for Cancer Tour de North will ride through town.  Representing Quesnel on the ride from Fort St. John to Williams Lake is Const. Thomas Stewart.  The riders will be welcomed at the first annual Jail ‘n Bail which will take place at the Canadian Tire store from noon – 4 p.m. Sept. 14.

If you know of someone who deserves to be “arrested”, forms are available at the Quesnel Unit office, Integris Credit Union, Canadian Tire and the RCMP detachment.  The Quesnel Unit will be hosting a dinner Sept. 13 for the Cops for Cancer participants.

The dinner is at the St. John the Divine Anglican Church Parish Hall.  Thank you to the Parish Council for donating the use of the hall for this occasion.  The staff of Integris Credit Union will serve the riders breakfast Sept. 15 before they make their way to Williams Lake for the end of the ride.  All money raised by Cops for Cancer is used for pediatric cancer research and to support programs such as Camp Goodtimes, which is a camp for children who have cancer and their families.

Our next Quesnel Unit meeting is Sept. 15 at noon at our office on Front Street.  This is a change from our regular second-Wednesday-of-the month schedule, to accommodate the Cops for Cancer Tour de North Jail ‘N Bail event.

At our meeting, we’ll be gearing up for our fall and winter activities.  We are happy to see returning members and prospective new members.

Olive Walsh is a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer.
