The Quesnel River Archers hosted its annual Indoor 3-D Archery Shoot Feb. 24-25 at the Gamache Arena on Sharp Road.

Local archers as well as those from Williams Lake, Prince George, Vanderhoof and 100 Mile House attended the event, for which organizers had set up more than 60 animal targets in the arena.

Each archer must shoot three animals per station, with two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday. Each competitor received a colour card, to denote which targets they needed to shoot – for example, younger competitors would aim for different targets than more experienced competitors; or an archer using a recurve bow would aim at different targets than someone using a compound bow.

The highest score over the three rounds wins the category.

Quesnel River Archers president Wayne Schaefer, who has been shooting for around 14 years, says 3-D archery is where the fun is.

“You have to know where the 10-ring is on the animal; that’s what you are aiming for. But you don’t know how far away the target is; so you have to judge that distance.

“Some people are really dialled in and can pick that distance.”

Club members had set up the targets on Friday night, including deer, moose and geese, as well as some unexpected targets like a zombie, a raptor and a black widow spider.

Quesnel archers competed in 25 different categories, with plenty of top 3 placements (full results from the shoot below).

Local archers also showed off their skills at a Prince George Indoor 3-D Tournament hosted by the Silvertip Archers on Feb. 17-18, with many Quesnel shooters placing in the top 3 in five categories.

In the Masters Men’s Open, Quesnel’s Chris Harrington came first and Layton Smith second.

Local archer Becca Nazaruk placed first in the Ladies Unlimited category, and Louise Smith took first in the Ladies Masters Unlimited.

Dan Yelawega placed second in Men’s Long Bow.

In the Prince George shoot’s Masters 60 Traditional Ladies category, Sandi Walker came first and Darlene Gobbi second.

The Quesnel River Archers will next host a regional shoot this weekend, March 4, at the indoor facility on Reid Street.
