Colourful leaves and a grey sky

Under a grey, rainy sky, over wet, treacherous ground, QJS and Correlieu runners hit the trails around Ten Mile Lake.

“The 10 Mile Lake race was indeed a significant challenge because it is the hilliest and most challenging course they will run all season, especially in the pouring rain.  Fortunately, such conditions mirror the conditions that are all too often the norm at the Provincial Championships in early November,” QJS coach Scott Trueman said.

Both teams had great performances, with the only downside to the day being the soggy conditions.

Trueman was very happy with his team’s results.

“I would have to say this is undoubtedly the strongest QJS cross-country team in five years. We have a good shot at making it to the Provincial Championships with two teams both boys and girls.

Trueman had good reason  to be excited about his team’s performance, as QJS’s Olivia Baptiste took first overall for the girls, grades 8–12, as well as first in her category, juvenile girls.

In bantam girls, Avery Drew won silver, Lyra Jonasson won bronze, Raechel Fowler was fifth and Cassidy Giesbrecht was sixth.

In bantam Boys, Brett Mero won gold and Braeden Smith won bronze.

Racing up to the competitive senior boys category, Dane Jacobsen was fifteenth and Liam Matzner eighteenth. Lucus Martins, Brennan Schwartz, and Austin Voigt all finished in the top 30 out of a large field of male runners.

The Correlieu Clan likewise had a positive experience, aside from the weather.

“I was really pleased with the team, especially the junior girls,” Correlieu coach, Pat Marsh said.

“They are improving in every race.”

Kyra Teetzen finished second in junior girls despite running spikeless over the slippery trails. Bayley McGillivray and Mia Kozak were close behind, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, a great accomplishment in their first year cross country running. Brea Wood followed in sixth.

Kim Rutledge and Amanda Albers sat the race out due to injuries, but hope to be back for zones to round out the required five-member team.

Cole Dinsdale finished third in the senior boys category, and is, according to Marsh, running very well and gets closer to the College Heights runner ahead of him every race. Dylan Cathcart finished in 13, with his eye on improving for provincials.

Konrad Teetzen was injured and didn’t finish the race.

The boys are hoping they can slip in for second place at zones as a team, since Jon Richardson and Brodey Lamarche have joined the team to give it five runners.
