Quesnel showed up in force to the B.C. Secondary School Gymnastics Provincial Championships in Delta at the beginning of the month (March 7-8).

Twelve athletes from Correlieu Secondary School, Quesnel Junior School and North Cariboo Christian School made the trip down and all exceeded expectations.

They were able to compete against the top gymnastics schools across the province and more than hold their own.

The Correlieu boys, Christopher Henderson and Darryl Lacoste, were able to claim the Team Trophy for Level 2 Men’s.

Their combined scores beat out those of the top two Level 2 Men athletes of every other school to win the prize.

While Henderson has been competing for some time, Lacoste is fairly green.

“Darryl was in the very first competition he’s ever participated in, and everything overall was five times better than what he does at home,” says coach Taylor Flynn.

“He just perfectly stepped up to the plate and squeezed everything and pointed his toes and rocked it.”

The meet was also the last one for long-time competitor Sierra Moore.

She has been competing within the high school program since she was in Grade 8 and was presented with a rose by her coaches to commemorate her excellent run.

“Our highs cshool program isn’t that recognized, but it’s a really great program for the kids,” says Marlene Higgins, president of the Quesnel Technics Gymnastics Club, “Everybody thinks, oh, you have to be in [the] competitive [stream] but it’s not about that.”
