Curlers hit the ice in Quesnel for Valentine’s bonspiel

Teams competed in the event from Feb. 18 - 20 at the Quesnel Curling Centre

Granite was flying throughout the weekend as the Quesnel Curling Club took advantage of relaxed COVID-19 rules to host a fully booked Valentine’s mixed bonspiel.

The A-side event, sponsored by Design Flooring was won by Bud Burbee’s team, which featured lead Cindy Tobin, second Ron Durocher and third Lori Durocher.

Burbee’s team was able to pull out the win after curling club manager and opposing skip Dave Plant wrecked on a guard with his final stone, allowing Burbee to pick up a steal of one in the final end, and a 4-3 victory.

In the B-side final, sponsored by Cariboo Fire Protection, Justin Nillson’s team, including lead Shari Needham, second Jeff Needham and third Wendy Needham picked up a 6-5 win over a team skipped by Shane Yamamoto 6-5. Nillson jumped out to a four-point lead after four ends, before a furious comeback from Yamamoto fell one rock short after Nillson peeled out the final stone for the win with his final rock in the eighth end.

The C-side final, sponsored by Royal LePage’s Ray Blackmore, also came down to the final rock. A team skipped by Alex Coffey, featuring lead Sharon Bennett, second Ivan Harris and third Luanne Coffey, defeated a team skipped by Tim Richards 5-3. Coffey was up one with hammer in the final end, and an overcurled shot left Coffey a chance to tap it back with his final shot for the win.

There are two more bonspiels scheduled for the club to finish out the year. The Wheel ‘N Spiel Ladies Bonspiel will be hosted from March 4 - 6, and the St. Patrick’s Day Open Bonpiel will take place from March 18 - 20.
